IB Chemistry > Atomic theory (hl) > Atomic orbitals

12.2 - Atomic orbitals

s,p,d,f orbitals are the regions of space in which electrons may be found - 99% probability
( higher level students need to know the shapes of s and p only)

Electronic structure
energy shells- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.
sub-shells- s, p, d, f
orbitals- s has 1
p has 3
d has 5
f has 7
electron pairs- each orbital holds two electrons
