4.5 - Physical properties

4.5.1: Compare and explain the following properties of substances resulting from different types of bonding: melting and boiling points, volatility, conductivity and solubility. Consider melting points, boiling points and volatility of similar substances, such as F2, Cl2, Br2 and I2, and substances with different types of bonding and different intermolecular forces. Students should be aware of the effect of impurities on the melting point of a substance. The solubilities of compounds in non-polar and polar solvents should be compared and explained. Consider also the solubilities of alcohols in water as the length of the carbon chain increases.

4.5.2: Predict the relative values of melting and boiling points, volatility, conductivity and solubility based on the different types of bonding in substances.
