3.3
- Chemical properties
3.3.1 Discuss the similarities in chemical nature of elements in the
same group.
The following reactions should be covered:
alkali metals (Li, Na and K) with water and with halogens (Cl2 and Br2)
halogens (Cl2, Br2 and I2) with halide ions (Cl-, Br- and I-)
halide ions (Cl-, Br- and I-) with silver ions.
Reactions of the halogens with alkali and confirmation of the silver halide
by reaction with ammonia solution are not required.
3.3.2 Discuss the change in nature, from metallic to non-metallic, of
the elements across period 3.
Use the study of the period 3 oxides to illustrate, for example, the change
from basic through amphoteric to acidic oxides and their reaction with
water. Halides and hydrides are not required.
